Electric Cars May Stir Buzz But Future Uncertain

TOKYO (Dow Jones)–Zero-emission cars will be the buzz word at the Tokyo motor show this week with some auto makers rushing to launch electric vehicles in addition to hybrid models but it may be a while before they enter the mass market.

Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) and Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO), the world’s top two hybrid markers, have shifted to a low gear in promoting the latest technology, even as others are steering ahead with plans to deploy electric cars on a global scale.

Toyota and other Japanese car makers will display their latest electric concept cars at this year’s Tokyo show in which no major U.S. and European car makers will participate.

Among global car manufacturers, Nissan Motor Co. (7201.TO) and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. (7211.TO) are bracing for a global launch of their electric cars starting from next yearwhile Daimler AG will begin large-scale production of its electric cars in 2012.

Toyota – the world’s biggest car maker by sales volume – said it will introduce an electric car by 2012 but only in the U.S. Honda, Japan’s second biggest car maker, will likely roll out an electric car in a few years in the U.S. and may also do so in Japan, according to executives familiar with the matter. But it hasn’t finalized any such plan yet.

“It will be a long way ahead for electric cars to become a profitable business,” Mamoru Kato, an analyst at Tokai Tokyo Research Center, said.

“Companies that don’t build hybrid cars want to regain their losing momentum (in sales of green cars) with electric cars. But electric cars won’t reach the mass market (anytime soon). … There is no reason (for Toyota and Honda) to push ahead with electric cars. Their strategy should be to push hybrids” for now, he said.

Hybrid vehicles are estimated to account for about 13% of global sales by 2020 while the ratio for electric cars is projected to be 1% to 2% by that year, according to estimates by JP Morgan.
